What this test assesses, and what it doesn’t

In brief

The test carried out by the Institut für Produkttests is an everyday user test. It assesses how a product is delivered, how it is set up, operated and used — and whether the price is appropriate. It is neither proof of safety nor proof of efficacy.

Technical safety, performance or efficacy testing is not part of this practical test. Other testing and verification procedures apply to these, which we explain further down.

Full transparency about the procedure

The Institut für Produkttests is a private testing institute based in Oldenburg. Manufacturers can submit products to it for testing. The products are then used in everyday life by testers over a period of at least 14 days and assessed according to a fixed rating scheme. If the test is passed, the associated test seal can be licensed for a fee.

This procedure differs, for example, from Stiftung Warentest or ÖKO-TEST, which select or purchase products independently of the manufacturer and are financed differently. The procedures are therefore not directly comparable.

What the practical test nevertheless offers: the assessment is carried out by external testers using a fixed points scheme. A very good rating is not automatically guaranteed. Several of our test reports contain specific points of criticism – and we publish these on this page too.

What impressed

The large-area panel achieved full marks in two of the four categories. The testers highlighted the stable, robust construction, the large treatment area for several parts of the body at once, operation via touchscreen, remote control and app, and the flexible mounting options for wall, door and stand. The low operating noise, the even light distribution and the heat generation, described as pleasant, also counted in its favour. The device offers six individually controllable wavelengths (630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 nm) and 18 programmes.

What was criticised

The report does not list any specific weaknesses. Points were deducted for value for money (95 %) and in the practical test (97 %).

What impressed

The FaceMask achieved full marks in the First impression and Practical test categories. The report cites very good workmanship, comprehensive and well-organised features and simple, intuitive everyday operation. The silent operation and the even light distribution across the face were described as pleasant; the sessions fitted easily into the daily skincare routine.

What was criticised

The one-size design was criticised. By its very nature, the “one size fits all” principle does not suit every face shape. On smaller faces, the eye or mouth openings were sometimes not optimally positioned. According to the test report, however, after a brief readjustment the mask stayed in place securely enough for reliable use. This point is reflected in the Individual criteria category, in which the FaceMask scored 40 out of 45 points.

What impressed

The tester described the device as a high-quality, versatile red light panel. The flawless packaging, the build quality, the instantly responsive touchscreen and the flexible positioning and mounting options were rated positively. The extensive accessories, including safety goggles, remote control and stand, as well as the packaging design, were also highlighted positively. The device achieved full marks in both the First impression and Individual criteria categories.

What was criticised

The report does not list any specific weaknesses. The lowest individual score is for value for money (90 %): the device was classed as above-average in price, but the value was rated as convincing in view of its features and workmanship.

What impressed

Very good build quality, a modern and flexible design for versatile placement on the body, simple and easy-to-understand operation. The silent operation and the even, pleasant warmth were highlighted, as were the durable materials and neat seams. Full marks in First impression and Individual criteria.

What was criticised

Three points: the control unit can slip slightly during vigorous movement. The elastic strap feels a little rough on the skin. And at €199, the price is slightly higher than that of comparable flexible red and near-infrared pads — although, in the testers’ view, justified given the overall quality.

What impressed

The high-quality packaging, simple set-up, modern design and versatile range of uses impressed the testers; set-up took around 15 minutes and the device runs quietly. Full marks for packaging and presentation (product protection 30/30, design 10/10, clarity 15/15) and for all individual criteria — heat generation and comfort 15/15, positioning flexibility 15/15, wearing comfort 15/15. Material quality 30/30, appearance 20/20.

What was criticised

The most significant deduction was for stability, with 20 out of 30 points. According to the test report, the extended flex arm tends to wobble in certain positions, especially when the device is free-standing. In addition, 17 out of 20 points were awarded for functionality.

The products are not tested in a laboratory but used by testers in normal everyday life for at least 14 days. The overall grade is based on the score achieved and is expressed using a rating scheme modelled on the German school grading system, in which 1.0 is the best rating.

Frequently asked questions about the test results

Who is the Institut für Produkttests?

Institut für Produkttests GmbH is a private testing institute based in Oldenburg, Germany. Among other things, it carries out practical tests in which products are used under everyday conditions over a set period and rated using a points system.

Did heilys® pay for the test?

Yes. heilys® commissioned and paid for the tests. Use of the test seals is also subject to a fee and is licensed. We are deliberately open about this so that you can put the results into context.

Is this the same as Stiftung Warentest?

No. Stiftung Warentest buys products anonymously from retailers and is funded independently of manufacturers. The Institut für Produkttests is commissioned by the manufacturer. Both are tests — but not the same kind of test.

Does the test result say anything about effectiveness?

No. The test assesses build quality, handling and value for money. We have a separate page on the effects of red light therapy and the current state of research — including the areas where the research is not yet conclusive.

Does the test result say anything about safety?

Only to a very limited extent. The testers can assess build quality, stability or heat generation in everyday use, for example. However, this practical test does not replace a technical safety assessment. Photobiological safety is assessed in accordance with IEC/EN 62471; for electrical safety, the relevant legal and technical requirements apply depending on the product. Why do you also publish the points of criticism?

Because a test from which you only quote the good parts is no longer a test — it’s an advert. That’s why we show not only overall grades and test seals but also the points of criticism mentioned in each report: the stability of the flex arm on the Gen30, the strap and control unit on the FlexiPad, and the one-size-fits-all design of the FaceMask 2.0.
