In short

The Institute for Product Testing's test is a practical application test. It assesses how a product is delivered, assembled, operated, and used — and whether the price is appropriate. It is not a safety certification and not an efficacy certification.

This practical test does not include technical safety, performance, or efficacy tests. Other testing and verification procedures apply for these, which we will classify below.

Full Transparency on the Procedure

The Institute for Product Testing is a private testing institute based in Oldenburg, Germany. Manufacturers can submit products for testing. The products are then used by testers in daily life over a period of at least 14 days and evaluated according to a predefined scoring scheme. If the test is passed, the associated test seal can be licensed for a fee.

This procedure differs, for example, from Stiftung Warentest or ÖKO-TEST, which independently select or purchase products from manufacturers and are financed differently. Therefore, the procedures are not directly comparable.

What the practical test nevertheless achieves: The evaluation is carried out by external testers based on a predefined scoring scheme. A very good rating is not automatically guaranteed. Several of our test reports contain specific criticisms – and we also publish these on this page.

What impressed

The large-area panel achieved full marks in two out of four categories. Highlights included the stable, robust construction, the large application area for multiple body regions simultaneously, operation via touchscreen, remote control and app, and flexible mounting options for wall, door and stand. The low operating noise level, uniform light distribution and pleasant heat development were also positively noted. The device offers six individually controllable wavelengths (630, 660, 670, 810, 830, 850 nm) and 18 programs.

What was criticized

The report does not list any specific weaknesses. Deductions were made in the price-performance ratio (95%) and in the practical test (97%).

What impressed

The FaceMask achieved full marks in the First Impression and Practical Test categories. The report highlighted very good workmanship, extensive and clear features, and simple and intuitive daily usability. The silent operation and uniform light distribution over the face were described as pleasant; the application integrated well into the daily skincare routine.

What was criticized

The one-size-fits-all approach was criticized. The "one size fits all" principle naturally doesn't suit every face shape. For smaller faces, the eye or mouth openings sometimes did not sit optimally. However, after a brief readjustment, the mask remained stable enough for reliable use, according to the test report. This point is reflected in the Individual Criteria category, where the FaceMask scored 40 out of 45 points.

What impressed

The tester described the device as a high-quality and versatile red light panel. The flawless packaging, processing quality, the responsive touchscreen, and the flexible positioning and mounting options were positively evaluated. The extensive accessories including safety glasses, remote control, and stand, as well as the packaging design, were also highlighted positively. The device achieved full marks in the First Impression and Individual Criteria categories.

What was criticized

The report does not list any specific weaknesses. The lowest individual score was for the price-performance ratio (90%): the device was categorized as above-average expensive, but the ratio was considered convincing given the features and workmanship.

What impressed

Very good manufacturing quality, modern and flexible design for versatile placement on the body, simple and easy-to-understand operation. The silent operation and the uniform, pleasant heat development were also highlighted, as were durable materials and clean seams. Full marks in First Impression and Individual Criteria.

What was criticized

Three points: The control unit can easily slip during vigorous movement. The elastic band feels a bit rough on the skin. And the price of €199 is slightly above that of comparable flexible red and near-infrared pads — but in the testers' opinion, justified given the overall quality.

What was convincing

The high-quality packaging, easy assembly, modern design, and versatile application options convinced the testers; assembly took about 15 minutes, and operation is quiet. Full marks for packaging and presentation (product protection 30/30, design 10/10, clarity 15/15) as well as for all individual criteria — heat development and comfort 15/15, positioning flexibility 15/15, wearing comfort 15/15. Material quality 30/30, appearance 20/20.

What was criticized

The most significant deduction was for stability, with 20 out of 30 points. According to the test report, the extended flexible arm tends to wobble in certain positions, especially when the device is freestanding. Additionally, 17 out of 20 points were awarded for functionality.

The products are not used in a lab, but by testers in normal everyday life for at least 14 days. The overall grade is derived from the score achieved and is given according to a grading scheme based on the German school grading system, where 1.0 represents the best grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about the test results

Who is the Institute for Product Testing?

Institut für Produkttests GmbH is a private testing institute based in Oldenburg. Among other things, it conducts practical tests in which products are used under everyday conditions over a specified period and evaluated according to a scoring system.

Did heilys® pay for the test?

Yes. heilys® commissioned and paid for the tests. The use of the test seals is also subject to a fee and is licensed. We explicitly point this out so that you can correctly interpret the results.

Is this the same as Stiftung Warentest?

No. Stiftung Warentest anonymously buys products in stores and is funded independently of manufacturers. The Institute for Product Testing is commissioned by the manufacturer. Both are tests — but not the same type of test.

Does the test result say anything about effectiveness?

No. The test evaluates workmanship, handling, and price-performance ratio. We have a separate page on the effects of red light therapy and the state of research — and also indicate where research is not yet conclusive.

Does the test result say anything about safety?

Only to a very limited extent. For example, test persons can assess workmanship, stability, or heat development in everyday use. However, this practical test does not replace a technical safety inspection. Photobiological safety is assessed according to IEC/EN 62471; for electrical safety, the relevant legal and technical requirements apply depending on the product. Why do you also publish the criticisms?

Because a test from which only the good parts are quoted is no longer a test, but an advertisement. That's why we show not only overall ratings and test seals, but also the criticisms mentioned in the respective report: for the Gen30, the stability of the flexible arm; for the FlexiPad, the belt and control unit; for the FaceMask 2.0, the one-size-fits-all.
